What is the implant procedure and how does it work?

The implant procedure works by using titanium screws, which are placed directly into your jawbone. After they are fitted, the bone will start to connect to the tooth, so they remain firmly in place. 

Once the area has healed, a porcelain crown will be placed over the top of the implant. Your dentist will take special care to make sure that the implant blends in naturally with your existing teeth. 

Before your procedure, you will have a check-up with a dedicated implant dentist to make sure you are suitable for treatment. They will assess the health of your teeth, take X-rays and review your medical history.

The implants are often fitted in two sessions. First, your dentist will fit the implant into the jawbone. Then in around six months, once the area has healed, you will come back to the practice to fit your replacement crowns.

However, your implant journey from consultation to completing treatment and fitting your crowns can be anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. 

This is because you will need to allow around 3 months or more for the treatment area to heal after your initial procedure. Over time, your jawbone will connect with the titanium screw so the crowns can remain firmly in place. 

The healing process varies from patient and patient and we’ll be there every step of the way.

You can’t usually get dental implants on the NHS as dentures are often a cheaper alternative. They can restore the appearance of a healthy smile but aren’t suitable for everyone.
