Protect Your Little Ones
The importance of good dental health in children can not be underestimated, and the earlier you can get your child into positive habits the better. We understand that your children may be hesitant or even anxious about visiting the dentist, but our friendly staff and relaxing clinic make children’s dentistry as easy as 1-2-3.Â
Â
When should I take my child for their first dental check-up?
Â
We would advise you bring your child for their first check up before they are one, or within 6 months of the eruption of their first tooth. Bringing your child to the dentist early helps establish a “relationship,” a place where they can receive consistent care. Early visits help your child get used to our dental practice, making future visits easier and less anxiety-inducing.
How do I maintain my child's healthy baby teeth and prevent cavities?
Â
For younger children, we advise you to help with brushing until they’re able to do it effectively, usually around age 6-7. Even if your child can hold a toothbrush, you’ll need to ensure that they brush for the full 2 minutes, covering all tooth surfaces. Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay. After the first tooth comes in, use a fluoride toothpaste. For children under 3, use a small smear, and from age 3 to 6, use a pea-sized amount.Â
Â
What can I do to encourage my teenager to care for their adult teeth?
Teenagers care about their appearance and health. Explain how good oral hygiene prevents cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and helps maintain a beautiful smile. Show them how unhealthy teeth can lead to more serious dental issues later, like expensive treatments or even tooth loss.

Many parents struggle with getting their child to brush regularly. Tips include making brushing fun by using kid-friendly toothbrushes or brushing songs, setting a routine, and rewarding progress. It’s also important for parents to set a good example by brushing together.
We encourage you to bring your child as soon as their teeth start to come through, and then have one or two routine checkups each year. It’s never too early to get your child into good habits and have a professional dentist look at their teeth.Â
Parents often seek advice on cavity prevention. Tips include brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, limiting sugary snacks and drinks, making sure your child drinks plenty of water, and encouraging regular dental check-ups.
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, try to place it back in the socket and get to the dentist immediately. If it can’t be reinserted, keep the tooth moist (in milk or a saline solution) and get to the dentist as soon as possible. Baby teeth should be evaluated by a dentist to ensure no damage to the adult tooth beneath.
Of course you can, but in appropriate amounts. For children under age 3, a rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste is recommended. After age 3, a pea-sized amount is ideal. Fluoride helps prevent cavities, but too much can cause dental fluorosis (white spots on teeth).
